Deschutes County Courthouse Expansion Project
In 2022, the Oregon Judicial Department appointed two additional judges to the Deschutes County Circuit Court in Bend. To provide adequate courtroom space for the new judges, as well as to improve the accessibility and security of the courthouse, the County developed a project to expand and remodel the existing facility.
Construction of the Courthouse Expansion Project began in the spring of 2024. A new, three-story, 50,933 square foot structure is being added to the existing courthouse, which will include:
- Two sets of courtrooms, including jury deliberation rooms, judges chambers, and support staff offices
- A more accessible entrance
- An expansion and upgrade of the court security checkpoint
- Public service counters, a lobby and reception area
- Secure staff parking
- Sallyport for the transport of in-custody individuals
Additionally, the existing main courthouse will be remodeled to include the following improvements:
- A new hearing room
- Meeting spaces
- A security office
- Court administration offices
The total cost for the project is $46.8 million, which includes the design and construction of the new addition, plus the remodeling of the existing, main courthouse. The Courthouse Expansion Project is expected to be complete in the summer of 2026.
