County Solid Waste teams up with local students to raise awareness about plastic pollution

While much of the conversation around plastic pollution focuses on recycling and cleanup efforts, these approaches address the symptoms, not the root cause. The true solution lies in reducing plastic production before it starts.

Inspired by the global movement #TurnOffthePlasticTap, Deschutes County Solid Waste invited local middle school and high school students to create their own "Turn Off the Plastic Tap" installations. The art works serve as an eye-catching reminder of the urgent need for systemic changes that limit the amount of plastic being produced and used.

The installations will be on display Friday, April 4 through Sunday, April 6, in the Center Plaza at the First Friday Art Walk in the Old Mill District.   

“This project gives students a powerful voice in the conversation about plastic pollution,” said Jackie Wilson, Community Outreach Coordinator at Deschutes County Solid Waste. “Through art and education, the students can inspire others to rethink their relationship with plastic and take meaningful action to reduce waste before it starts.”

Community members are encouraged to visit the installations and engage with the student artists from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on  Friday, April 4. The installations will remain on display throughout the weekend, providing public education on the impact of plastic production and the importance of waste prevention.
