Release Date: 4/5/2016

LEXINGTON, KY -- The 2015 Distinguished Knighton Award for best performance audit in the extra-small audit shop category has been awarded to the Deschutes County Internal Audit Program by the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA). The Award will be formally presented to Deschutes County Internal Auditor David Givans at ALGA’s Annual Conference in May.

The report, Light Fleet Management, was judged on several key elements, such as the potential for significant impact, the persuasiveness of the conclusions, the focus on improving government efficiency and effectiveness, and its clarity, conciseness and innovation.

“Having this work recognized on a national level is quite an honor,” said Deschutes County Commissioner Tammy Baney. “I am proud to work with David and have a great sense of ease knowing we have such a dedicated professional keeping us as efficient and transparent as possible.”

The Light Fleet Management audit reviewed the management of the County’s light vehicle fleet. In the audit report, Givans identified a lack of fleet management policies, underutilized and older vehicles issues and potential improvements for accounting and fiscal policies.

ALGA commended Givans for recommendations that were feasible and have the potential for making a positive impact on the County.

“Having this professional internal review system makes me very proud to be a part of Deschutes County,” said Deschutes County Commissioner Tony DeBone. “We thank David Givans for his efforts.”

Each year, local government audit organizations from around the U.S. and Canada submit their best performance audit reports for judging. The purpose of the competition is to improve government services by encouraging and increasing levels of excellence among local government auditors. Judges from peer organizations determined that this audit was among the best of 2015.

The Association of Local Government Auditors is a national audit association founded in 1985 committed to supporting and improving local government auditing through advocacy, collaboration, education, and training, while upholding and promoting the highest standards of professional ethics.
