In 1996, Deschutes County became the first county in the nation to pass its initial resolution adopting the principles of Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ). Deschutes County Board of Commissioners reaffirmed their support with a 2003 BARJ resolution.
Balanced consideration of community protection, offender accountability and competency development bring clarity and reason to juvenile justice issues. This comprehensive philosophy speaks to every aspect of delinquency, accountability, treatment and prevention. These three principles, fully implemented, create a juvenile justice system that truly operates in the best interests of the child and community.
The Deschutes County Detention facility is located on the first floor of the Deschutes County Juvenile Community Justice building; all other juvenile services are located on the second floor. Some services are also provided in the North County office in Redmond and South County office in La Pine.
