  • New detached structures (garage, shop, barn, etc)
  • Remodels
  • Additions

Prior to applying for the actual Building Permit, you will need to complete the following steps:

  • Ensure land use requirements are met through Planning, if applicable
  • Ensure there is an approved septic system or approval to install a septic system, if applicable
  • Ensure there is a driveway access
  • Create an Oregon ePermitting and have licenses associated to your account. Homeowners, make sure to associate the Homeowners Licenses to your account. Visit Oregon ePermitting FAQs for more information.

Land Use Research

If you are building in the city limits of Sisters or La Pine, you will need to contact those planning departments.

Ask a Planner through our online form or visit our Bend office to verify your property is a legal lot of record (LOR) and your project meets land use requirements.

Septic and Driveway Research

Contact a Permit Technician through the Ask a Permit Technician Form or visit our Bend office to verify if your project requires a septic permit and/or a Driveway Permit.

  • You must have a valid site evaluation identifying the type of septic system approved for installation in order to obtain a septic installation permit.

  • A septic authorization permit is required if there is an existing approved septic system and you are proposing a replacement dwelling, the addition of a bedroom to a dwelling or proposing plumbing in a detached structure.

If there is not an approved Driveway Permit for your property, you will be required to apply for a Driveway permit, this is applicable for 1 & 2 Family Dwelling or Structures.

Proceed to Application Guide

Once you have completed the steps outlined above, proceed with the Application Guide to apply for the building permit.
