Stabilization Center Success

On June 1, Deschutes County Stabilization Center (DCSC) marked its official three year anniversary. The DCSC serves as a critical resource to the communities of rural central Oregon. Since this time, it has been in 24/7 continuous operation and provided more than 10,424 services to individuals in crisis. Deschutes County Stabilization Center serves individuals of all ages and is free and accessible to whoever seeks support.

Since its inception, Deschutes County Stabilization Center has lifted a tremendous burden off the local emergency response system. Since 2020, approximately 30% of more than 10,000 services were diversions from the local emergency room. An additional, 19% of individuals were referred directly by law enforcement in lieu of going to the jail or other outcome. Furthermore, 108 individuals indicated they would have ended their life had they not come to Deschutes County Stabilization Center (and 1,704 stated they would not have known what they would have done.)

Throughout all of this work, the Stabilization Center has served as a model across the state of Oregon and the United States. DCSC has been host to representatives from Benton County, Clackamas County, Columbia Community Mental Health, Lane County, Polk County, Yamhill County, Berkley, CA, Anchorage, AK, Minneapolis, MN, and other municipalities to show how a crisis center can effectively be ran.

The Stabilization Center has been recognized with the following awards:

  • 2023 - Northwest CIT Community Resource of the Year
  • 2021 - Daily Journal of Commerce Top Projects (3rd place public safety)
  • 2021 - Central Oregon Association of Realtors Best Overall Service to the Central Oregon Community

Additionally, Oregon state senators and state representatives as well as U.S. Senator Ron Wyden have toured the facility to see how our model could be funded and applied across the state and nation.

Senator Wyden said, "Through your work at the Stabilization Center, you have stood up for vulnerable people in need of respite. Thanks so much for continuing to meet Oregonians' mental health crises where they are."
